Top Olympians from Canadian Colleges

In the past few days the world witnessed some of the most spectacular sporting events carried out at the London Olympics. There were some breathtaking moments that will be etched forever. During Olympics, athletes from all around the world come to compete in various sports and gymnastic events thus gaining world recognition. Canada too had sent some of its top contenders to this year's Olympics who earned many accolades for Canada. Even though the region is famous for its Winter Olympics, athletes displayed their prowess nevertheless. Some of the top Olympians this year hail from varied Canadian colleges. Here is a lowdown on these top Olympians provided by Vancouver College.

* Karen Cockburn: Born in Toronto, this star trampoline gymnast began trampolining at the age of 11. She attended the York University, a public university in Ontario, Toronto and Canada. Her achievements include; bronze medal in Summer Olympics 2000, gold medal in Trampoline world Championships 2003 in Germany and silver medal at the Summer Olympics 2004.

* Clara Hughes: Canadian cyclist and speed skater, Clara has many accolades to her credit. Born in Winnipeg, she graduated from Elmwood High School. She won 2 bronze in Summer Olympics in 1996, Atlanta whereas 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze in three Winter Olympics. She is the only person to have won multiple medals in both in Summer as well as Winter Olympics. Apart from Olympics, she has won 8 Pan American Games medals.


* Donovan Bailey: Originally from Manchester, Donovan migrated to Canada and graduated from Queen Elizabeth Park High School in Oakville, Ontario. He holds the world record of 27.7mph, the fastest for 100 meters race earning him a gold medal in Olympics 1996. Apart from Olympics, he also won in 1995 Track and Field Championships for 100m sprint and 4 X 100m relay.

* Alex Baumann: This Canadian athlete has won two gold medals and also set two world records in swimming. He is a graduate of Laurentian University and has been involved in competitive swimming from the age of nine. By the time he was 17 he had won 38 Canadian swimming records and earned a world record in 200 meter medley. After accepting swimming scholarship, he attended the Indiana University where he was trained under the famous James 'Doc' Counsilman. In the 1984 Olympics Los Angeles he won gold in 400 meters and set the world record of 4:17.41. In the same Olympics he also won in 200 meters medley with the record time of 2:01.42.

* Cindy Klassen: She is a long track speed skater and is a six-time medalist in the Winter Olympics. She set record by winning 5 medals in single Olympic games held in 2006, Turin. She is a graduate of Maple Leaf School in North Kildonan, Winnipeg and Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, Winnipeg. She is also the first Canadian to win overall title at the World Speed Skating Championships.
