Think of them as a truffle-looking confection with endless flavor combinations. A cake pop is similar but has a lollipop stick stuck through it or, if you use a cake pop pan, it can also be a small ball of cake enrobed in chocolate. Cake balls seem to have become the latest craze in the confection world with the lofty possibility of replacing the cupcake craze. Small, versatile and sweet, they?re portion-controlled treats that lend themselves to a variety of flavors and occasions.

While I have jumped on the cupcake bandwagon with enthusiasm, I admit I had never tried a cake ball (or cake pop) before. But with an eye toward becoming more educated, I made my first foray using the "Cake Balls" cookbook. It gives a really nice introduction as to what cake balls are then has a basic chapter that most cookbooks have in talking about baking basics and equipment. The key chapter to read is about making cake balls, from baking the cake and making the icing to crumbling the cake, mixing cake crumbles with icing, rolling into balls and dipping, drizzling and decorating with chocolate.

Don?t skip this chapter as it also has tips and troubleshooting tricks should you flounder in cake ball-making.

There are three basic cake recipes in the book: chocolate, vanilla, and yellow cake; as well as three basic frosting recipes: chocolate, vanilla, and cream cheese. Once you get past the basics, the real fun of the cookbook begins. The recipes are chaptered somewhat by flavors: "Classics" such as Birthday Cake; "Chocolate Lovers" features Chocolate Salty Pretzel; "Fresh and Fruity" includes Strawberries and Cream; festive "Jingle Balls" boasts Creamy Eggnog; and "Fun with Cake Balls" concludes with Tres Leches Cake Balls. ?

Reading the recipe titles alone made my mouth water and reach for a mixing bowl. Beyond the basic recipes, the rest of the recipes are reminiscent of ?semi-homemade? type of baking in that they start with a base cake mix and rely on add-ons for the flavor combinations of the finished product. But the beauty of the recipes is you always have the option of making your own cake from scratch rather than a mix. The recipes merely suggest what type of cake you should start with to make the cake balls.

I tried the basic chocolate cake recipe and the basic chocolate frosting recipe. The cake was very easy to make and came out with a chocolatey, fluffy, cakey texture. Likewise, the frosting came out well. It was a bit sweet but I thought that would be a good complement to the dark chocolate flavor of the cake.

Then it came time to mix the two. I followed the instructions religiously on how to make cake balls: crumble, mix, roll, freeze, dip in chocolate, let set. Thanks to clear directions in the cookbook, I think I made credible cake balls. Unfortunately, however, much as I liked the cake and the frosting separately, it turns out I didn?t like them mushed together, even when enrobed in my favorite milk chocolate couverture. It was too cloyingly sweet and the texture, while looking trufflelike, lacked the creaminess I associate with truffles. Instead, it was like eating raw cake batter that had too much sugar. It?s possible I didn?t bake the cake enough, a common trap the book warns against, although for once I baked until the toothpick came out clean from the center. But, more than likely, cake balls are just not for me. ?I?m not a frosting person to start with and mixing it with cake lent it too much sweetness with not enough cake to offset. I also wanted and expected more cake than frosting in a cake ball and that wasn?t what I got.

However, if you are a frosting person, then cake balls might be for you and you would do well to try out this book to make your own. Beyond showing you how to make cake balls, "Cake Balls" provides a fantastic list of flavor combinations and ideas of how to use and decorate with cake balls. Candy Bar Overload with chopped up Snickers Bars inside and decorated on top would be perfect for a Halloween party. Pumpkin Spice might become a new Thanksgiving favorite. Southern Red Velvet Cake Balls can be dressed up for Christmas, Valentine?s Day, or a bridal shower. If you like pictures, there are so many mouthwatering ones in here I might convince myself to try again with another flavor combination. ?

But for now, it looks like the cake ball craze might pass me by.?

UTEP football: Miners not road worriers

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The grim statistic frequently pops up when the UTEP football team's charter plane starts heading east and keeps going.

That will be the case today when a Miners squad that seems on the edge of a breakthrough, but one that hasn't yet managed it, lines up against East Carolina, 1,693 miles from the Sun Bowl, in front of 50,000 fans at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Eighteen times in its 99-year history UTEP has played a game in the Eastern time zone. It has lost 17 of those and tied one, back in 1949 at West Virginia.

So how do the Miners keep from being intimidated by those numbers?

"I had no idea about that," sophomore guard Kyle Brown said when asked about the 0-17-1 stat.

And how do they

reverse it?

"We just show up," he said with a shrug. "This year is different from every other year. In other years, we were lackadaisical. Going on the road this year has been different."

Well, UTEP is 0-2 away from home in 2012, though the search for reasons this team is different from the others could begin with the third-quarter fightback at two-time defending Big 10 champion Wisconsin.

"We showed we can play with anybody in the country," UTEP quarterback Nick Lamaison said. "We already knew that. Now, everyone knows it."

Coach Mike Price, meanwhile, comes up with a different, but almost as daunting, number. When college football teams travel across two times zones, they win 15 percent of the time.

"I

don't care about time, I'm always late to stuff," tight end Kevin Perry said with his ever-present grin. "Time doesn't make a difference to me. When we get there, I'll be ready to play."

Said Marylander Horace Miller: "I'm from the East Coast. It doesn't make a difference at all. We're going out there to win."

The above answers are, of course, the correct ones. This UTEP team, starting with Price, is sure it is tougher, more aggressive, more confident and less prone to intimidation than previous ones. There have been moments that have backed that up in a 1-3 start against arguably the toughest schedule in school history, but the signature victory has eluded them.

Beating East Carolina would count. While the Pirates have been under .500 since winning a league title in 2009 (13-15 in coach Ruffin McNeill's third year; 2-2 this season), they established themselves as the favorite to represent the Conference USA East Division in the league title game when they won 24-14 at Southern Miss.

More stats: UTEP is 7-14 against the C-USA East Division and 2-8 on the East Division road with five straight losses.

The Pirates, though, aren't the stereotypical rough-and-tumble East Division team that usually mashes

UTEP into the ground. McNeill came to East Carolina from Texas Tech, where he was under Mike Leach, and like the Red Raider, they run a four-receiver spread on offense and a 3-4 defense.

Still, with sophomore quarterback Shane Carden making his third career start, UTEP said its first priority is to stop the nation's 113th-ranked rushing offense from moving the ball on the ground.

"We are not going to let them run the ball. They will have to beat us throwing the ball," said linebacker Jamie Irving, who should get his first start of the year today. "If they beat us throwing, good on them, but they won't beat us running."

"We've got to stop the run. We've got to make them throw the ball," cornerback Darren Woodard said. "They have a good quarterback and good receivers, so they are going to do both."

By the numbers, junior college transfer Vintavious Cooper (5.5 yards per carry) has been more effective at tailback than co-No. 1 Reggie Bullock (3.7). But the two will probably share a rotation. Carden has been accurate and taken care of the ball, but did hold it too long in taking seven sacks against North Carolina last week in a 27-6 loss.

The big focus for UTEP will be to cut down on big plays, as it has given up five scores of more than 45 yards in the three losses. ECU, though, has only one offensive touchdown of that length or longer this year.

Defensively, "They bring four guys, five guys all the time, you just don't know which guys it's going to be," Price said, and across the board UTEP is more concerned about its own execution than what East Carolina is going to do on the defensive side of the ball.

"It doesn't matter who they are, whether the defensive end is 290 (pounds) or 210," Perry said. "There's nothing anyone can show us we haven't seen. It's about executing and letting the other team worry about what they need to do to stop us."

The Miners will probably continue to use a committee at tailback until Nathan Jeffery proves he is 100 percent following his opening-game groin injury. But they've found a hot hand each game, and now Lamaison is getting into a nice groove with receivers Mike Edwards and Jordan Leslie.

The stakes, obviously, are huge. Lose and UTEP is 1-4 and would have to win five of its last seven to salvage anything at all. Win and they are 1-0 in conference and suddenly a co-favorite in C-USA's West Division with Tulsa.

"As far as I'm concerned, we can erase," the 1-3 start, Price said. "If we'd won a couple of games instead of going 1-3, I'd be bragging like hell about it. But it's a new season, a new day and it doesn't matter what happened before."

Said center Eloy Atkinson: "This is a brand new season, what we've been working for. The other season was the preseason; it was to get us ready. Playing big, athletic, strong teams, we've built a lot of confidence and established depth for the rest of the season."

"This is a big deal, the start of a new season right here," Edwards said.

And if UTEP can improve to 1-17-1 in the Eastern time zone, it will feel like the start of a new program.

"Not winning on the road is last year, it's behind us," Woodard said.

"We can play wherever," Irving said. "We can play somebody in a parking lot, it still doesn't matter."

Measuring the universe?s 'exit door': For the first time, an international team has measured the radius of a black hole

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The point of no return: In astronomy, it's known as a black hole -- a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Black holes that can be billions of times more massive than our sun may reside at the heart of most galaxies. Such supermassive black holes are so powerful that activity at their boundaries can ripple throughout their host galaxies.

Now, an international team, led by researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory, has for the first time measured the radius of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy -- the closest distance at which matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.

The scientists linked together radio dishes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a telescope array called the "Event Horizon Telescope" (EHT) that can see details 2,000 times finer than what's visible to the Hubble Space Telescope. These radio dishes were trained on M87, a galaxy some 50 million light years from the Milky Way. M87 harbors a black hole 6 billion times more massive than our sun; using this array, the team observed the glow of matter near the edge of this black hole -- a region known as the "event horizon."

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."

Doeleman and his colleagues have published the results of their study this week in the journal Science.

Jets at the edge of a black hole

Supermassive black holes are the most extreme objects predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of gravity -- where, according to Doeleman, "gravity completely goes haywire and crushes an enormous mass into an incredibly close space." At the edge of a black hole, the gravitational force is so strong that it pulls in everything from its surroundings. However, not everything can cross the event horizon to squeeze into a black hole. The result is a "cosmic traffic jam" in which gas and dust build up, creating a flat pancake of matter known as an accretion disk. This disk of matter orbits the black hole at nearly the speed of light, feeding the black hole a steady diet of superheated material. Over time, this disk can cause the black hole to spin in the same direction as the orbiting material.

Caught up in this spiraling flow are magnetic fields, which accelerate hot material along powerful beams above the accretion disk The resulting high-speed jet, launched by the black hole and the disk, shoots out across the galaxy, extending for hundreds of thousands of light-years. These jets can influence many galactic processes, including how fast stars form. 'Is Einstein right?'

A jet's trajectory may help scientists understand the dynamics of black holes in the region where their gravity is the dominant force. Doeleman says such an extreme environment is perfect for confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity -- today's definitive description of gravitation.

"Einstein's theories have been verified in low-gravitational field cases, like on Earth or in the solar system," Doeleman says. "But they have not been verified precisely in the only place in the universe where Einstein's theories might break down -- which is right at the edge of a black hole."

According to Einstein's theory, a black hole's mass and its spin determine how closely material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. Because M87's jet is magnetically launched from this smallest orbit, astronomers can estimate the black hole's spin through careful measurement of the jet's size as it leaves the black hole. Until now, no telescope has had the magnifying power required for this kind of observation.

"We are now in a position to ask the question, 'Is Einstein right?'" Doeleman says. "We can identify features and signatures predicted by his theories, in this very strong gravitational field."

The team used a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry, or VLBI, which links data from radio dishes located thousands of miles apart. Signals from the various dishes, taken together, create a "virtual telescope" with the resolving power of a single telescope as big as the space between the disparate dishes. The technique enables scientists to view extremely precise details in faraway galaxies.

Using the technique, Doeleman and his team measured the innermost orbit of the accretion disk to be only 5.5 times the size of the black hole event horizon. According to the laws of physics, this size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole -- the first direct observation to confirm theories of how black holes power jets from the centers of galaxies.

The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland and Antarctica, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.

Christopher Reynolds, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland, says the group's results provide the first observational data that will help scientists understand how a black hole's jets behave.

"The basic nature of jets is still mysterious," Reynolds says. "Many astrophysicists suspect that jets are powered by black hole spin ... but right now, these ideas are still entirely in the realm of theory. This measurement is the first step in putting these ideas on a firm observational basis."

In the?post, climate change skeptic and blogger Steven Goddard states that Antarctic sea ice reached its highest level ever recorded for the 256th day of the calendar year on Sept. 12. He reasons that the Southern Hemisphere must be balancing the warming of the Northern Hemisphere by becoming colder (and thus, net global warming is zero).

The National Snow & Ice?Data?Center?(NSIDC), which tracks sea ice using satellite data, explains on its website why Antarctic ice has weathered global warming more robustly than Arctic ice. Goddard dismisses the explanation, concluding instead, "Antarctic and Arctic ice move opposite each other. NSIDC's dissonance about this is astonishing."

Despite its lack of scientific support, Goddard's post has garnered attention around the Web. In a Forbes.com column about the record high Antarctic?sea ice, skeptic James Taylor writes, "Please, nobody tell the mainstream media or they might have to retract some stories and admit they are misrepresenting scientific?data."

But if anyone had asked an actual scientist, they would have learned that a good year for sea ice in the Antarctic in no way nullifies the precipitous drop in Arctic sea-ice levels year after year ? or the mounds of other evidence indicating?global warming is really happening.

"Antarctic sea ice hasn't seen these big reductions we've seen in the Arctic. This is not a surprise to us," said climate scientist Mark Serreze, director of the NSIDC. "Some of the skeptics say 'Well, everything is OK because the big changes in the Arctic are essentially balanced by what's happening in the Antarctic.' This is simply not true." Projections made from climate models all predict that global warming should impact Arctic sea ice first and most intensely, Serreze said. "We have known for many years that as the Earth started to warm up, the effects would be seen first in the Arctic and not the Antarctic. The physical geography of the two hemispheres is very different. Largely as a result of that, they behave very differently."

The Arctic, an ocean surrounded by land, responds much more directly to changes in air and sea-surface temperatures than Antarctica, Serreze explained. The climate of Antarctica, land surrounded by ocean, is governed much more by wind and ocean currents. Some studies indicate climate change has strengthened westerly winds in the Southern Hemisphere, and because?wind has a cooling effect, scientists say this partly accounts for the marginal increase in sea ice levels that have been observed in the Antarctic in recent decades.

"Another reason why the sea-ice extent in the Antarctic is remaining fairly high is, interestingly, the?ozone hole," Serreze told Life's Little Mysteries. This hole was carved out over time by chlorofluorocarbons, toxic chemicals formerly that were used in air conditioners and solvents before being banned. "The ozone hole affects the circulation of the atmosphere down there. Because of the ozone hole, the stratosphere above Antarctica is quite cold. Ozone in the stratosphere absorbs UV light, and less absorption [by] ozone makes the stratosphere really cold. This cold air propagates down to the surface by influencing the atmospheric circulation in the Antarctic, and that keeps the sea ice extensive."

But these effects are very small, and Antarctic sea-ice levels have increased only marginally. In the coming decades, climate models suggest rising global temperatures will overwhelm the other influences and cause Antarctic sea ice to scale back, too.

The extent of Arctic sea ice at its summertime low point has dropped 40 percent in the past three decades. The idea that a tiny Antarctic ice expansion makes up for this ? that heat is merely shifting from the the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern and therefore global warming must not be happening ? is "just nonsense," Serreze said.

Michael Bisping kicks ?disrespectful? fan out of UFC 152 workouts

Michael Bisping has a fight with Brian Stann at UFC 152 on Saturday night, but before that, he found a fight with a fan who disrupted his workout on Wednesday. He explained why he threw the fan out of the open workouts to MMA Fighting. (The explanation is at the beginning of the video.)

"I was just trying to do my pads and stuff, and the guy's got no respect. He annoyed my boxing coach more than anything. My boxing coach got a little upset. I could see it in his eyes," Bisping said.

"I was trying to get a workout in, and he's just disrupting the whole thing. He's upsetting my boxing coach, and so I'm like, you gotta go. You gotta go. If you can't have respect ... we're here. We're putting on a display for you guys. If you can't respect it, you have to go outside with the naughty children."

During big fight weeks like this one, the UFC will often offer three free events to fans: open workouts, the press conference and weigh-ins. Open workouts are undoubtedly the best option, because it lets fans get close to fighters to take pictures and see how they train.

The fans and media being there make the workouts more casual than a normal pre-fight training session, but it's still a workout. Fighters are cutting weight and thinking about their bout and should get to do that without being heckled. Even someone like Bisping, who loves to jaw with anyone and everyone, deserves to work out without distraction.

Bayer seeks EU approval for birth control patch

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German drugmaker Bayer requested European approval for a contraceptive skin patch as it seeks to broaden its birth-control business and challenge Johnson & Johnson's Evra patch.

The hormonal contraceptive, to be produced for Bayer by Swiss company Acino, was shown to be effective with a good safety profile in clinical trials involving 4,200 women, Bayer said on Thursday.

It added that detailed results will be presented at the FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Rome in October.

The transparent patch, which Bayer says could generate annual sales of 250-500 million euros ($325-$650 million), is applied once a week either to the abdomen, buttocks or outer upper arm, where it delivers a steady dose of hormones through the skin.

If successful, Bayer's product would offer an alternative to J&J's Ortho Evra birth control patch, which is approved in North America and Europe.

U.S. drug advisers have, however, recommended that the label of Ortho Evra patch be simplified to better explain the risk of blood clots.

A spokeswoman said Bayer was in talks with the Food and Drug Administration over a possible filing also in the U.S.

Bayer, is one of the largest players in the $8 billion global market for hormonal birth-control pills, competing with J&J, Teva's Barr Pharmaceuticals and Ireland-based Warner Chilcott.

Its main oral contraceptive brand Yasmin has also been subject to controversy over health risks. Bayer has agreed to pay a combined $400 million to settle almost one third of about 6,000 legal claims in the U.S. that Yasmin caused blood clots.

Merrill Lynch raising minimum fee on equity trades for clients

(Reuters) - Bank of America Corp.'s Merrill Lynch Wealth Management is raising the minimum fee it charges retail clients for equity trades, to $75 from $50, an increase the company says will put it more in line with rates charged by its peers.

Several Merrill brokers told Reuters they were informed of the change, which takes effect November 1, in an internal memo sent on Thursday.

Merrill Lynch spokeswoman Susan McCabe confirmed the change, adding that the price increase will not affect how the company's 16,000 advisers are compensated. The price increase will affect clients in the Merrill Lynch brokerage business and in Merrill's Private Banking and Investment Group, but not clients in the company's U.S. Trust division.

Representatives from the nation's other biggest brokerage firms, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, UBS Wealth Management Americas and Wells Fargo Advisors, could not immediately be reached for comment about their minimum equity fees.

Thursday's memo also said the firm would implement a modest increase in its equity commission schedule, but McCabe declined to provide details.

The minimum fee applies to straight transactions, such as when clients call their brokers and ask them to buy 500 shares. More involved transactions, such as when advice is involved, typically come with additional fees.

McCabe, who said the last time Merrill increased its equity pricing fee was in 2003, declined to disclose what percent of Merrill's business would be affected by the change, but said it represents a small number of trades for the firm.

Merrill advisers who spoke to Reuters said the change will not affect many of their clients since most do simple trades with a discount broker and not with a Merrill adviser.

The $75 fee, like the current $50 fee, will apply only to trades in which the principal value of the stock is $300 or more, McCabe said. Smaller trades will continue to cost no more than 25 percent of the minimum principal value. For example, a client who buys $100 in stock is charged $25.
