94% Looper

All Critics (231) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (216) | Rotten (15)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

Looper is among the cleverest, most skillfully crafted and entertaining sci-fi thrillers of the past 20 years.

The smartest, most stylish and most outright entertaining science-fiction film of the year.

A thought-provoking, heart-pounding take on the applications and ethics of time travel which, oddly enough, doubles up as a lesson in the importance of good parenting.

This is one of those rare genre movies (like the original TERMINATOR) that reminds us that Sci-Fi can be smart. It's much more than just a bunch of special effects and explosions. It's what all movies should aspire to be.

While it sometimes feels like it's trying to do much, Looper manages to be a creditable and exciting sci-fi flick that homages the past while carving out a unique identity.

Much as he did in Brick, Johnson creates a carefully drawn world in Looper that exists by its own particular set of rules.

... has an irresistible energy and a don't-give-a-damn unpredictability ...

Beautifully crafted, acted and written.

Anchors high-concept thrills and captivating ideas in a world of challenging morality and intricate personal consequences.

Truly imaginative but all the twists and turns make the overall film difficult to follow. Plus Gordon-Levitt has not reached leading man status yet.

Kind of a reverse-"Terminator" without any of James Cameron's wit (or wisdom),

An endlessly creative mind-blowing film that captures everything right about the movie going experience. Johnson conjures up the most imaginative action/science fiction film since 'Inception.'

Part science fiction, part mob movie, and with a nice infusion of dark comedy at just the right moments, Looper is Johnson's best movie yet, and manages to be hugely entertaining, affecting, and thought-provoking.

takes us far beyond the film's high-concept premise into the kind of emotional terrain that too often escapes even the best genre filmmakers

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Looper may not take us back to the future as satisfyingly as Robert Zemeckis' Marty McFly trilogy or James Cameron's Terminator franchise, but writer-director Rian Johnson does enough right to all but guarantee that he has a future cult film on the books.

The best time travel films play on emotion rather than logic, and once Looper realises this and drops all the tail-chasing about how time travel works it settles into the engrossing action/drama about destiny it should have been from the get go.

Top 5 Priorities for the GOP in Coming Months

In the wake of a difficult 2012 cycle featuring weak and not-ready-for-prime-time candidates, Republican leaders are looking to assert more control over the nomination and recruitment processes.?As Politico reported Monday, the party?s Senate campaign committee is plotting to ?prevent more Todd Akins? from emerging over the next two years.

But there are already indications that the mission to stop unelectable candidates from emerging is a lot harder than advertised.? In the two upcoming off-year gubernatorial elections, an assertive right could complicate Virginia Republican prospects in a crucial off-year election and act as a nuisance as Christie prepares for a tough campaign for a second term.?Two Republican Congressional firebrands are already considering Senate bids of their own, and would be as potent in primaries even though they?d be highly vulnerable in general elections.? And there are already rumblings among conservative activists about challenging several of their own incumbents up for re-election in 2014, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

How various party leaders navigate these challenges will go a long way in assessing the party?s future direction ? and whether they have the power to control the often-unruly grassroots.? It will show whether activists will tolerate a center-right Republican, like Christie, who will occasionally stray from conservative orthodoxy ??It will indicate whether Republicans can afford to sound a more moderate note on immigration without risking retribution from the base. ?

Here are the five of the biggest priorities for the Republican establishment in the coming months. Their successes on these fronts will indicate whether they've learned the right lessons from missed opportunities over the last two cycles.

1. Nominating a Republican who can appeal to the rising Virginia electorate: The earliest showdown is shaping up in the Old Dominion, where lieutenant governor Bill Bolling is squaring off for the gubernatorial nomination against Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.? The nomination fight has suddenly taken on more urgency, in the wake of President Obama?s victory in the state for the second straight election.? Virginia is now a decidedly purple state, and with its more-Democratic parts growing fastest, may even lean Democratic in future presidential elections.

But conservatives in the state haven?t bought that message, at least not yet.? Bolling is already sounding the alarm that the conservative Cuccinelli would be near-unelectable in the Old Dominion, thanks to his outspoken socially conservative views and often-strident rhetoric. But despite holding the support of popular Gov. Bob McDonnell, Bolling faces a tough challenge, given that state party leaders opted to choose the nominee through a closed convention instead of an open primary ? a process that empowers the most conservative elements of the party.? Virginia GOP operatives privately believe Cuccinelli is the heavy favorite to emerge as the nominee.

Cuccinelli has shown impressive political acumen throughout his career, holding a Northern Virginia Senate seat for seven years and winning 57 percent of the vote in his Attorney General race. But a gubernatorial campaign is a different ballgame and his socially conservative views will receive much scrutiny.? No one expects him to moderate his positions, but if he?s the nominee, he?d have to emphasize economic issues, and argue he?s best-positioned to continue the McDonnell legacy. The makeup of the Virginia electorate won?t be as Democratic as it was last year, but it probably won?t be as favorable as it was for McDonnell in 2009, either.

Virginia has a long history of electing a governor of the opposite party to the president, and that streak would favor the Republican nominee in 2013.? If a Democrat breaks that record ? especially a non-native Virginian like Terry McAuliffe -- it would suggest that the state party hasn?t learned many lessons from 2012 about the changing nature of the state.

2.? Keeping the base on board with Christie:? Gov. Chris Christie has gone from one of the most popular Republicans ? a front-runner in early 2016 presidential polling ? to one being openly questioned about his loyalty to the Republican party for embracing President Obama?s support in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.? Last Sunday, the Drudge Report mocked Christie?s appearance on Saturday Night Live, saying he was clowning around as his constituents suffer in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.? He received a lukewarm reception from his GOP colleagues at last week?s Republican Governors? Association, according to the New York Times, even as he prepares to chair the organization in 2014. ?It?s a notable departure from the near-unanimous plaudits the straight-talking governor received from the right, pre-Sandy.

Most political observers believe Christie?s standing back home has been strengthened by his hurricane response.? He?s received newfound appreciation from Democrats, who have publicly praised his governance.? Newark Mayor Cory Booker, the Democrats? only bona fide prospect, may have some second thoughts about running against Christie in the wake of the governor?s popularity boomlet.

But for the GOP, the bigger question is whether Christie?s bipartisan pivot will earn him long-term blowback from the right.? One early test will be whether anyone challenges him in a primary from the right. He?s a lock to be re-nominated, but if he receives a credible opponent, it would indicate the demand for conservative orthodoxy is quite high ? even in a blue, Northeastern state like New Jersey.? Remember: Christie only won 55 percent in the 2009 primary against Steve Lonegan, a Bergen County mayor, despite receiving support from most party organizations.? As a popular incumbent, he?s in better shape this time, which would make it all the more self-defeating for conservative detractors to wound him before a competitive general election.

3. ?Encouraging Steve King to stay in the House. ?One of the first signs that Republicans are willing to more aggressively intervene in their primaries came from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who all but urged tea party favorite Steve King to stay out of the state?s Senate race.? At the RGA?s annual meeting, Branstad told my colleague Reid Wilson that he didn?t think King could win statewide, and preferred his more-establishment colleague to run Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa.? It?s the kind of sentiment that party leaders recently expressed behind closed doors, but now are being more open about their concerns.

Branstad?s worries, however, could fall on deaf ears. ?King, who said he?s considering a bid, would be well-positioned to win support from evangelical voters in the western half of the state, and his anti-illegal immigration rhetoric offers loads of red meat to the base.? Just look at the Iowa Republican presidential caucus results, for a sense of the party sentiment.?

In a Senate cycle filled with Republican opportunities, Iowa isn?t an absolute must-win for the GOP.? But if someone like King runs and undermines their chances early on, it?s a signal the tea party movement is alive, well, and isn?t backing down.

4. Keeping Michele Bachmann in check. ?Unlike Iowa, Minnesota offers Republicans one of their best Senate pickup opportunities in 2014.? Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., has kept a low profile, but barely won in a great year for Democrats and should garner serious opposition.? But the big question is whether the elephant in the room ? Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn ? will make a play for the seat, or sit still in the House.

If past is prologue, Bachmann is bound to be interested. ?She doesn?t have much interest for the nitty-gritty of legislating, and a high-profile Senate race would be another major platform for her to aspire to in the wake of a presidential debacle. ?A Bachmann candidacy would be a nightmare for GOP campaign officials.?? She barely won re-election to her solidly-Republican House seat after an embarrassing finish in the Iowa presidential caucus. Still, she could scare off other Republican contenders because of her imposing fundraising and star power among tea party activists.

The big questions: Will her disappointing presidential campaign chasten her, or embolden her to run for the Senate and rebuild her image?? And what can GOP campaign officials offer, if anything, to encourage her to stick around the House for another two years?

5. Avoiding primary challenges against Senate incumbents.? In the last two election years, Republican primary voters have ousted at least one sitting senator from Congress.? In 2010, it was Utah?s Robert Bennett. In 2012, it was Indiana?s Richard Lugar.? And in both cycles, the demand for party purity ended up costing Republicans several seats, including Lugar?s. Whether the threat still exits in 2014 will go a long way in determining whether the grassroots energy will be trained on taking back the Senate, or more focused on intramural battles.

The three most inviting targets this time around are: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, and Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss. After the election, RedState publisher Erick Erickson specifically named McConnell as a top target, arguing a challenge was necessary ?just to drive the point home we aim to fight? party leadership.? But of the three, McConnell is the strongest shape, and has already been working to dissuade anyone from challenging him. He tapped Sen. Rand Paul?s 2010 campaign manager Jesse Benton to run his campaign, a shrewd move positioned to win over conservative critics dissatisfied with his establishment profile.?

Graham is potentially more vulnerable, but only if a credible challenger steps up.? The Club for Growth, which has a solid track record beating Republicans in primaries, signaled Graham was its top Republican target in a post-election briefing. ?And Graham has been a constant thorn in the side of immigration restrictionists, as one of the earliest GOP supporters of comprehensive immigration reform. ?Despite a lot of bluster in 2008 ? at the peak of the anti-illegal immigration activism ? Graham didn?t draw a top primary challenger, and he won with 67 percent. ??It would take the involvement of outside groups, pledging money to an opponent, to change that dynamic for 2014.

Chambliss is shaping up to be the most inviting target, given his bipartisan inclinations.? The Tea Party is alive and well in Georgia, and there are no shortage of potential challengers. Rep. Tom Price is exploring a bid, according to Roll Call and other conservative members of the delegation aren?t ruling anything out.

Holiday pet travel tips | OTC Insurance | Nova Scotia Insurance ...

OTC Insurance is an insurance broker in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, offering home, auto and commercial insurance. This blog looks at some pet travel tips.

The Christmas holidays is renowned as a busy time of year to travel. For some people, their pets will be coming along with them. For people who are going to be travelling with Rover of Muffin, here are a few tips, courtesy of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

  1. If you?re going to be travelling by car, get a pet ready for the trip by taking a series of professively longer excursions in the vehicle.
  2. Don?t feed your pet in a moving vehicle. Instead, feed them a light meal three to four hours before leaving.
  3. This point is especially important as your pet will be away from home: make sure your pet is micro-chipped and is wearing a collar and ID tag. Be sure to include your contact information on the collar.
  4. Bring the requisite pet supplies along, such as food, water, bowls, etc. To give your pet a sense of familiarity during the trip, include one of their favourite pillows or toys in their carrier.

A CUP OF JO: Paris elopement

This is lovely, but there seems to be a lot of elopement 'porn' out there these days...and I can't help but wonder if it defeats the purpose of eloping. I mean--you have what's supposed to be this private wedding ceremony, but it's recorded and then it's posted on the internet for the whole world to see and fawn over. Don't get me wrong, this video is great and if it were my wedding I'd cherish it forever and want to share it...but it's also so slick, which gives the whole thing a performative vibe. Like a regular wedding, I suppose. I love weddings, loved my own, and I love watching these videos and the photos you've been posting. But I also love the idea of a old fashioned elopement, where the ceremony is truly, really, deeply intimate and private. This kind of feels like a music video of an elopement.

INCB President voices concern about the outcome of recent referenda about non-medical use of cannabis in the United States in a number of states

For information only - not an official document

UNIS/NAR/1153
15 November 2012

VIENNA, 15 November (UN Information Service) - The President of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), Raymond Yans, has voiced grave concern about the outcome of recent referenda in the United States of America that would allow the non-medical use of cannabis by adults in the states of Colorado and Washington, and in some cities in the states of Michigan and Vermont. Mr. Yans stated that "these developments are in violation of the international drug control treaties, and pose a great threat to public health and the well-being of society far beyond those states".

Noting that studies have shown that the abuse of cannabis can cause cognitive problems as well as contribute to mental disorders, the INCB President said: "Legalization of cannabis within these states would send wrong and confusing signals to youth and society in general, giving the false impression that drug abuse might be considered normal and even, most disturbingly, safe. Such a development could result in the expansion of drug abuse, especially among young people, and we must remember that all young people have a right to be protected from drug abuse and drug dependency."

The limiting of the use of cannabis to medical and scientific purposes is laid out in the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which was agreed to by 185 States, who by consensus decided to place cannabis under control and limit its use to medical purposes. "Since the adoption of this Convention, very potent new forms of cannabis have appeared on the illicit market, and technological advances have been used to increase the content of the most 'active ingredient', so to speak, in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The cannabis on the illicit market today is much more dangerous than that seen in the 60s and 70s," stressed the President of INCB, which is the quasi-judicial body charged with monitoring the implementation of the international drug control conventions by Governments. He went on to further state that for the international drug control system to function effectively, to achieve its aim of ensuring availability of drugs for medical purposes while preventing their abuse, the conventions must be universally adhered to and implemented by all States. In this regard, Mr. Yans stressed that national laws, policies and practices in drug abuse prevention and control should be fully aligned with the conventions. He further emphasized that States Parties have an obligation under the Conventions to ensure their full compliance with the conventions within their entire territory, including federated states and/or provinces.

Mr. Yans recognized the commitment of the Government of the United States to resolve the contradiction between the federal and state levels in the implementation of that country's obligations under the drug control conventions. The INCB President requested the Government of the United States to take the necessary measures to ensure full compliance with the international drug control treaties within the entire territory of the United States, in order to protect the health and well-being of its citizens.

SOPA Washout: Republican Study Committee Says Copyright Is ...

Photobucket

"He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper [(candle)] at mine, receives light without darkening me."
?- Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States

So it has come to this.

Even some Republicans are blowing the whistle on the absurd claims being pushed by the Copyright Cartels with a new blistering report by the Republican Study Committee.

The report details three myths:

1. The purpose of copyright is to compensate the creator of the content:
It?s a common misperception that the Constitution enables our current legal regime of copyright protection ? in fact, it does not.

2. Copyright is free market capitalism at work:
Copyright violates nearly every tenet of laissez faire capitalism. Under the current system of copyright, producers of content are entitled to a guaranteed, government instituted, government subsidized content-monopoly.

3. The current copyright legal regime leads to the greatest innovation and productivity...

It is on point 3 that the report dives into some of the more unfortunate consequences of copyright regime such as thwarting progress in music, science, digital libraries, and the use of copyright to protect state secrecy.

The policy response, according to the committee, should promote limiting damages from infringement, expanding fair use, punishing false claims, and heavily limiting the terms of a copyright with discentives for renewal.

Conclusion: To be clear, there is a legitimate purpose to copyright (and for that matter patents). Copyright ensures that there is sufficient incentive for content producers to develop content, but there is a steep cost to our unusually long copyright period that Congress has now created. Our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution with explicit instructions on this matter for a limited copyright ? not an indefinite monopoly. We must strike this careful Goldilocks-like balance for the consumer and other businesses versus the content producers.

It is difficult to argue that the life of the author plus 70 years is an appropriate copyright term for this purpose ? what possible new incentive was given to the content producer for content protection for a term of life plus 70 years vs. a term of life plus 50 years?

Where we have reached a point of such diminishing returns we must be especially aware of the known and predictable impact upon the greater market that these policies have held, and we are left to wonder on the impact that we will never know until we restore a constitutional copyright system.

Current copyright law does not merely distort some markets ? rather it destroys entire markets.

Obviously this echoes the libertarian rather than the progressive argument against "intellectual property" - an argument where the dangers of empowering the state rather than the destruction of the commons takes center stage. Nonetheless this is a positive development for those that value an open society as this report signals further congressional opposition to SOPA-like crackdown schemes hatched by the Copyright Cartels.

Before celebrating too loudly it is worth noting some of the political calculus at work.

Reading the report, or just the cliff notes here, one not need to strain oneself to see a larger agenda of limiting torts nor is it without merit to note that there is some political strategy in this position as noted elsewhere:

For Republicans, opposition to new intellectual property enforcement is starting to look like a political winner. It pleases conservative bloggers, appeals to young swing voters, stokes the culture wars and drives a wedge between two Democratic constituencies, Hollywood and Silicon Valley.
Obviously a bit of an overstatement (the article is from February 2012) given that young swing voters went for Obama and any feud within those constituencies did not prevent fundraising for Democrats from the entertainment or tech industry - not surprising given that when industries feel threatened they contribute more not less money to decision makers. But questioning the motives of political actors usually makes sense.

So, in the final analysis, the copyright system is fundamentally broken and the more desperate the special interests get in trying to empower it (SOPA) the more clear it is that the time for reform is now. Is this an opportunity for bipartisanship?

White House: Israel has right to defend itself

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) ? The White House on Saturday defended Israel's right to defend itself against attack and decide how to respond to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, blaming the ruling Islamic militant Hamas group for starting the conflict.

Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are in agreement that a de-escalation of the violence is preferred, provided that Hamas stops sending rocket into Israel, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters during the president's flight on Air Force One to Asia.

Israel launched the offensive on Wednesday by assassinating Hamas' military commander, but Rhodes said the U.S. believes "the precipitating factor for the conflict was the rocket fire coming out of Gaza. We believe Israel has a right to defend itself, and they'll make their own decisions about the tactics they use in that regard."

He added, "These rockets have been fired into Israeli civilian areas and territory for some time now. So Israelis have endured far too much of a threat from these rockets for far too long, and that is what led the Israelis to take the action that they did in Gaza."

The Israeli government has called up thousands of reservists and massed troops, tanks and other armored vehicles along the border with Gaza, signaling a ground invasion could be imminent.

Obama has spoken with President Mohammed Morsi of Egypt and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey about the situation.

"They have the ability to play a constructive role in engaging Hamas and encouraging a process of de-escalation," Rhodes said.

Israel on Saturday hit Gaza with nearly 200 airstrikes, expanding an aerial assault to include the prime minister's headquarters, a police compound and a vast network of smuggling tunnels.

"We wouldn't comment on specific targeting choices by the Israelis other than to say that we of course always underscore the importance of avoiding civilian casualties," Rhodes said. "But the Israelis again will make judgments about their military operations."

Forty-two Palestinians, including 13 civilians, and three Israelis have been killed in this past week's fighting.

Best of Our Blogs

The holidays are overwhelming for many reasons. For one thing, we may believe that during these next few months we must forgo our independence, freedom and self-growth and transform back into vulnerable little kids. Of course, a mere party or get together couldn?t undo the years of therapy you invested in. But being in the presence of those who think otherwise can give you temporary amnesia. You may find yourself, for example, doing what your parents want you to do or being uncomfortably accommodating. Worst yet, you can?t stop yourself.

It happens to me every year when visiting relatives. My husband asks, ?What happened to my wife and who is this little girl you replaced her with??

Thankfully, I?ve learned that while it?s tempting to fall back into familiar ways, I always have a choice to take care of myself. This means doing a self check-in, setting boundaries where I see fit, and saying, ?No? when I?ve reached my limit. It?s an important tool to learn not just during the holidays, but every day of the year.

And it?s also applicable whether you?re preparing for Thanksgiving next week, learning to be a better parent or making a decision to seek the help you need. It?s all about being aware of the choices you do have and realizing that no matter what situation you are in currently, you do have a choice. You can let others/fear dictate your life or you can finally choose to take care of yourself.

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That?

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill.

The short answer: the Order is Caudata.

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That?As I mentioned, this challenge wasn't that difficult?but it IS surprising to find a complex animal that has two closely related forms with features not normally associated with vertebrates. I was certainly surprised to find that there are salamanders without lungs and salamanders that are photosynthetic during a part of their lives. (Image via Wikipedia.)

From a search perspective, this wasn't that hard. I started with:

[ lungless vertebrate ]

and quickly found the lungless salamander link on Wikipedia. I was, I have to admit, slightly skeptical, so I did a second search by picking up the scientific name of one of the lungless salamanders (Batrachoseps) and doing a search for it:

[ Batrachoseps ]

and finding all kinds of authoritative resources (mostly herpetology departments at universities), all of which describe it as lungless.

These relatively slender salamanders absorb oxygen directly from the air through their skin and the tissue lining their mouth, a remarkable development that provides an interesting thought about how lungs might have evolved.

They also have a "naso-labial groove" that is lined with glands to help the animal with "chemoreception"?that is, with its sense of smell.

We normally think about the ability to smell and the ability to breathe as inextricably linked, but for these salamanders, they're two very different systems.

Now that I had a lungless salamander, I did the next obvious search:

[ photosynthetic salamander ]

and found that the embryos of the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) incorporate an algae (Oophila amblystomatis). The remarkable insight was to discover that they don't just live together, but that the embryo relies on the oxygen and carbohydrates that are generated by the algal cells. The salamander embryos rely on the green algae cells to make it through their first few weeks of life.

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That? This is particularly interesting since many people have suspected that mitochondria were originally bacteria that somehow became incorporated into animal cells. This looks very much like this same process is going on here. You could imagine an evolutionary story for salamanders that has a truly photosynthetic salamander in the distant future. (Image via Ted Levin/PhotoLibrary.com.)

One reader pointed out that there are also some lungless frogs found in Borneo and that some frogs have algae in their egg masses as well. So it's possible that some frogs might ALSO come in both lungless and photosynthetic forms. (But I wasn't able to find a study that confirmed the frog embryos were dependent on the oxygen produced by the algae... so we don't know if they're photosynthetic or not!)

But it was a nice find. And of course, it's easy to find the Order name for frogs: Anura.

And for all the readers who asked about why the picture of the sun rising over the water was a clue...it was simply a reminder than most salamanders and frogs need to spend some part of their life cycle in water (or at least very damp conditions).

EfficientGrip ?the hush..sh..sh..sh puppy of SUV tyres | For repair ...

?

Goodyear has launched what it says is its quietest ever SUV tyre. Based on instrumented interior noise tests conducted by Goodyear Innovation Centre in Luxembourg, under coast down conditions on smooth roads, Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV outperformed its predecessor in both noise and driving comfort.

Basically, the tyre is engineered using what the company calls QuietTred technology, which is a combination of a noise-dampening tread design and a shock absorbing carcass. The EfficientGrip SUV also features a high steel belt angle construction that allows for more structural flexibility that reduces vibrations from the road.

Obviously there is a lot more to it than this. In an interview with Goodyear Dunlop Tyres? corporate communications manager, James Peate, tyreMENonline?s Neil Thomas put the following questions.

So James, what elements make up QuietTred technology and what benefits will this bring to the customer?

As you?ve already mentioned, the combination of a noise dampening tread design and shock absorbing carcass provides for improved noise performances as the tire wears, resulting in a quiet ride and luxurious comfort. The noise dampening tread design consists of three elements:

Closed shoulder design that prevents radiating radial noise sound waves to reduce exterior and interior perceived noise level; increased number of pitches in which a higher number of block pitches (from 68 to 72) optimises block characteristics and sequence reducing noise harmonics and rib type design that provides smooth tread geometry into the footprint to lower the impact noise and reduce the radiated noise

The tyre?s shock absorbing carcass features an absorbing breaker arrangement that provides a more flexible structure that absorbs the tyre vibrations and reduces propagation of road irregularities.

Sounds highly technical! So what goes into providing the tyre with what you say is its outstanding grip?

There are two elements that provide outstanding grip performance that helps reducing wet braking distances and improves handling and control on both wet and dry road surfaces. First there are a high number of biting edges-what is known as high blade density-that provides more grip to the road and an optimised contact patch that enables a matched pressure distribution in key areas of the footprint allowing the tread pattern to work more effectively and generate more grip.

The EfficientGrip SUV also features superb handling particularly for heavy SUV vehicles with its unique combination of matching bubble blade sipes in the tread and carcass stiffness provides for a very responsive structure that will allow better reaction to driver steering inputs with high output cornering forces.

OK, so the EfficientGrip SUV looks and rides like a sedan tyre but what makes this product more suitable for SUVs than say the Eagle EfficientGrip sedan tyre?

Simply that the EfficientGrip SUV is designed to match the technical requirements of the SUVs. It has specific tread design geometry to match all road conditions that SUV can encounter, making it robust for even light off road driving and a robust construction that can resist to the higher loads that SUV would be able to carry, providing a durable structure.

The Eagle F1 Directional 5 also includes some SUV sizes, so what?s the difference in performance and application between the two products?

The EfficientGrip SUV is design to match the core consumer requirements of luxury SUV drivers that require low noise, high level of comfort and a responsive and save tyre whilst the Eagle F1 Directional 5 SUV sizes are targeted to SUV drivers that are looking for on road sporty performance and are sensitive to the looks and style of their vehicles where kit ups would provide an appealing solution to their driving requirements.

So how many kilometers can the purchaser expect to get out of an EfficientGrip SUV?

Internal testing, using size 235/65R17 on a Toyota over 32,500km, showed about 40% wear which indicates that we have a very robust performer in treadwear that out performs key competitors and predecessor products. The EfficientGrip SUV treadwear performance is a key performance contributor in selling to the market.

And who are the competitors?

Competitors will vary by markets but the two main ones in the luxury passenger segment are the Bridgestone Dueler D683 and the Michelin Latitude Tour HP.

What about fuel efficiency and dynamic balance?

As you know these are highly specialised areas, but basically when it comes to fuel efficiency it?s about using a high-loaded silica blend compound that reduces intra-molecular friction for a measurable reduction in consumption. With dynamic balance, the tyre manufacturing process has been specifically designed to ensure the best uniformity levels from our world-class latest plants and equipment such as specific component extruders and dedicated building machines, which ensures that the EfficientGrip SUV reaches uniformity and dynamic balance levels to match the segment?s competitor levels.

OK, ok?Sorry I asked! How about something a little less complex: Any OE fitments?

In Europe, EfficientGrip SUV is now an original fitment for Range Rover Evoque (235/55R19 105V XL) and Audi Q3 (215/65R16 98V XL) with plans to expand into more SUV OE platforms in the near future.

Thanks James. Looks like you could be onto a winner here.

We think so and thank you for your interest.

joann gangbusters: Self Improvement Hub: NLP And Self Hypnosis ...

By Rick S.

This essay is about some of the down sides to the cold winter months and how employing a few psychological tools you can survive but thrive through the dark, cold winter months.

Analysis shows that there's a general increase in levels of stress amongst the western population on the run up to the close of the year and thru the first few months into the next. This time of the year is also linked with increases in finance instability, increases in domestic disputes and mental health issues.

There are many factors concerned in this including the pressure on cash and time for the festive season, dark, cold winter months and being the time of year that folks re-assess there lives.

There are several methods 1 or 2 easy 'mind tools ' can help to ease this burden.

The issue of stress is a complex one and I do not intend this to be a comprehensive answer all for the issues. I do know that by taking a couple of minutes a day to clear out the strain and relax can have a major result on levels of stress. An easy self hypnosis trance induction that takes 20 minutes or less every day will significantly help. Just Google Self Hypnosis scripts and you'll find loads of good ones along with directions on the best way to utilize them.

The net result of spending this time will mean more focus, more energy and drive to get everything you need done. Of course the smart thing here is to use the induction to train the unconscious part of your intellect to be more effective. But more of that below.

We are noticeably impacted by sunlight and shorter daylight hours with spending more time inside. Again issues like GLOOMY and conditions are beyond the reach of this article, but by using creative visualization methods you may have an impact on how you are feeling. A simple idea like visualizing yourself relaxing on a warm beach somewhere can take a large amount of tension out of the day and bring you back to something similar to normality...but obviously there are some things we are able to do to extend the advantages still further.

One issue that appears to come up continually at the end of a year is that people re-appraise what they have achieved and their goals for next year. The impact of this for many individuals is disapproval over the past year and a feeling of nothing changing for the coming year. Here self hypnosis and NLP techniques can really help.

Your unconscious mind is the store house for all your memories, emotions and incessant behaviour. It is also where you keep your beliefs, values and identity. Using self hypnosis and NLP techniques you can draw plenty of these things into your consciousness and change them. The implications of this is gigantic for example:

Changing habits from nail chewing, smoking or getting to the gymnasium. Letting go of negative feelings like social anxiety, dread of failure and depressive states. Installing enabling concepts, sentiments and values such as self-confidence, abundance thinking, the facility to boost your business/role/relationships

By being able to let go of bad feelings around what you do not want and elevating your motivation for what you do desire you are making a self propelling comatose steered missile that's always driving you toward a better life.

Imagine having the ability to do this in 20 minutes a day and taking as much effort on it as you would a pussy sleep. Now for the bad news, sometimes getting this level of proficiency takes training. Any good self hypnosis course will give you the tools, process and practice to be in a position to do this quickly and easily. These kind of courses only take one or two days and are an excellent investment of time and money.

Think for an instant about all of the stress and strain of life sometimes and consider the ramifications of not only surviving but thriving, growing and developing a better future just through a regular 20 minute kitty nap...

CNN.com Story : "Why console gaming is dying" - DVD Talk Forum

By Blake Snow, Special to CNN

(CNN) -- If console gaming were a first-person shooter, it would be taking heavy fire right now. A red hue would envelop the viewable screen from all sides, an ominous sign of spilled blood.

Or worse, near-death.

Despite this, Nintendo will release its new Wii U console on November 18, ushering in the eighth and possibly last generation of traditional home consoles as we know them.

Consider this: Dedicated gaming sales ? including living-room consoles and handhelds ? are in the midst of a four-year tailspin. You might say that's because of a bad economy, but then you'd have to explain why movie revenue and cable TV subscriptions have largely stayed the same.

Or why music sales, gutted by online streaming and piracy, have held up better than slumping sales of console games. Or why the popularity of social, mobile and PC games have skyrocketed to unthinkable heights.

The problem seems to be isolated to dedicated video games. Video game industry sales in the United States, including game discs, consoles and accessories, were down 24% in September when compared with the same period last year. Many experts believe these decreases in profits, the rise of casual and social gaming and waning consumer interest are affecting makers of the three big living-room consoles: Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii.

So is this it then? Is the death of dedicated gaming upon us? In a word, no.

"I bristle when people suggest as much," says Adrian Crook, a game design consultant. "Consoles will grow again and will never go away."

But today's dedicated gaming business is arguably in its most tumultuous period since the 1983 gaming collapse. It's nowhere near ruin yet, thanks to big franchises like "Call of Duty," "Madden," and a select few mainstream console games. But the console's influence is waning, and there's uncertainty about its future.

Here's where the shots at console gaming are coming from, and how the industry might dodge and counter them.

Trojan horses

Since the '80s, console makers have dreamed of using their "dedicated gaming machines" as Trojan horses to further control the living room with a single, proprietary device.

That time has come. Gaming consoles have transformed into entertainment hubs for people to stream movies or YouTube videos. So much, in fact, that gaming consoles no longer are being used primarily for gaming. In fact, "40% of all Xbox activity now is non-game," Microsoft boasts. Amazon and Netflix streaming accounts for most of that, as they do for Wii and PS3.

Combined, game consoles account for half of all Netflix users. This is great news for the movie industry. Not so great for console gaming's bottom line, especially since the industry largely subsidizes consoles now.

In other words, a console isn't helping the gaming industry if it's mainly being used to stream Netflix movies.

Not only that, but gamers' tastes have evolved to include quick, bite-size gaming sessions -- something consoles have never been good at. (Gamers must go to the living room, wait for the console to power on, load the game from the main menu, wait for it to boot.) It's much slower than tapping an icon on the smartphone you already carry in your pocket.

"Most people who liked console games in the past still do today," says Alex Hutchinson, creative director of Ubisoft, "but they're also looking for a wider spread of experiences. I want some games I can play quickly after work or while the kids are asleep and have a short satisfying experience."

As the number of gaming scenarios has increased, so, too, has the number of diehard gamers, says market researcher DFC Intelligence.

"Gamers have not only increased in number, but they are playing on multiple platforms now," says analyst David Cole. "Fewer enthusiasts describe themselves in a single camp such as 'I love Nintendo and hate Sony and Microsoft' or vice versa."

If enthusiasm for a single dedicated machine has waned, however ? or at least has been spread thin ? then the machine that demands the most attention will invariably suffer. That machine is the console ? the one you hold dear to your heart, but probably reach for less than you used to, whether you like to admit it or not.

Creative stagnation?

When it's not taking a backseat to more convenient app gaming, some say the console has stagnated creatively.

"You would think that XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade), PSN (PlayStation Network), and the rise of 'free to play' would have opened a door to smaller games that can take more risks creatively, but right now they're just cut-down versions of box-product games, or retreads of games I played on the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)," says Hutchinson, referring to the online gaming networks offered by Microsoft and Sony.

"I don't honestly think that someone who didn't want a 2-D platformer 20 years ago is going to wake up today and buy it on XBLA."

In addition, even big-box games have lost some of their visual allure in recent years. What were once graphical leaps in previous generations have now become bunny hops, at least to the average eye.

"People aren't as motivated by cutting-edge graphics as they once were," says Paul Neurath, creative director at Zynga, makers of "FarmVille," "Mafia Wars" and other social games on Facebook.

"Gamers that care intensely about graphics will continue to do so, but I think there are fewer now than there were in the past," he says. "Big leaps in graphics no longer exist. Unless there's some futuristic holographic display or direct brain implement we don't know about, it's hard to get a lot better."

Cole, the gaming analyst, agrees.

"Cutting-edge graphics in the past amounted to nothing more than killer CGI videos that added nothing to gameplay," he said. "That's a problem for an industry that up until recently prided itself on "buy this console because the games look a lot better than the ones you currently own.'"

In that sense, next-generation is no longer "next." We've arrived. Looking back, NES was certainly a step above Atari and imprecise joysticks. SNES and Genesis offered a huge leap in affordable home graphics. PlayStation and N64 immersed players into 3-D worlds replete with camera control. PlayStation 2 and Xbox overcame polygons in favor of rounded and non-jaggy looks. All of these were improvements upon previous generations of gaming systems.

But this current generation of consoles? With the exception of the early Wii years, they've largely offered better-looking versions of games we've already played. There have been a lot of great games to be sure, but fewer must-haves ? the kind that truly take the medium into uncharted territory.

Rise of cheap, social gaming

On the other hand, cheap, bite-size games such as "Angry Birds" and "Plants vs. Zombies" have thrived in recent years, ensnaring new players with novel gameplay.

"Virtually all of my clients are in social and mobile sectors, which have totally exploded in the last few years and continue unabated today," says Crook, who previously worked as a console designer.

As such, the demand for games has grown. "It's not so much that gamer interests have changed since the last generation, but that a whole group of new players have started playing games," says Zynga's Neurath. "These people would never have played last-generation console games. They're more into it for the social aspect."

Console makers so far have been ill-equipped to meet this demand, given their lucrative, 30-year-old model of selling games for $50-$60.

This partly explains why Nintendo, after five years of phenomenal Wii growth, is slumping. Industry experts say they're not in a position to meet the demands of most new social gamers.

We'll soon find out whether the Wii U can revive Nintendo's fortunes. The console's big new feature is a 6.2-inch touchscreen GamePad controller that interacts in creative new ways with the gamers' TV. Wii U players can play together, with one person using a TV screen and the other using the GamePad. A single player also can access additional content on the GamePad that enhances the game on the big screen.

Nintendo declined to comment for this story.

In a struggling economy, consoles also have fallen victim to the cut-rate pricing of games -- something consumers are exceedingly demanding but consoles have yet to offer.

In what has become a successful business model, many developers give away their games for free, then charge players later for status upgrades or gameplay perks.

"Say what you want about freemium, 'nickel and diming' of players, but I'd sooner pay nothing up front and $5 to $10 later than plunk down $60 on a game and hope I like it," says Crook.

Ubisoft's Hutchinson refers to it as a rising "fear" among console gamers. With so many deals to be had elsewhere, a lot of console gamers are making fewer full-price purchases than before.

"The free-to-play model has certainly impacted the industry," agrees Zynga's Neurath.

On top of that, 99? iPhone and iPad games are also taking a toll on the perceived value of dedicated gaming systems. Even PC games go on sale for as little as $5-$20 on occasion, a trend that has breathed new life into PC gaming and changed how some of the most ardent gamers value games.

"The business model for a five-year life cycle isn't working for Sony and Microsoft," says Cole. "They spend billions to R&D and market these new systems, they sell them at a loss for the first few years and then they don't really have the software business to make up the cost. They are better getting out of the business entirely rather than go after a five-year life cycle."

How console makers can fight back

In wake of all these changes, what's a console maker to do? What might reinvigorate interest in living-room and dedicated handheld gaming?

A first step would be fresher consoles themselves. The Xbox 360 is 7 years old, while the Wii and the PlayStation 3 are both 6.

Newer motion-controlled gaming systems such as Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's Move, which let players control in-game avatars by moving their arms and legs, have helped sustain interest. But experts say more upgrades are needed.

"New consoles would help, and the rumblings have already started at Microsoft and Sony," Hutchinson says. As if reminded by the lackluster sales of the handheld 3DS and PS Vita gaming systems, he adds, "But I don't know that we really need a new hardware cycle at this point from a creative standpoint."

Zynga's Neurath, who's worked with consoles and PCs since the 8-bit days, says console makers would do well to act more like nontraditional platforms. A new console dubbed Ouya will launch next year with free-to-play games and a $99 launch price, but keep the focus on what its manufacturer calls "TV gaming."

Crook believes there is still plenty of time for traditional console makers to correct their downward trend.

"There will always be a big market for core game systems," he says. "It all comes down to how consoles can get back to taking creative risks again, and what the platforms can do to broaden their markets and offer innovative means of interaction."

Ubisoft's Hutchinson wants console games to deliver more meaningful experiences.

"Games need to explain to players why they made certain artistic decisions, what mood they're setting with their lighting and color choices, and less about the technical features," he says. "We need to offer more experiences that are understandable to people's real lives, either in terms of mechanics or narrative, and attract people who don't read fantasy novels or watch the SyFy channel. Our mechanics are often not the barrier, but our content sometimes is."

The good news for the industry, and for gamers, is that video games in their broadest sense are most definitely here to stay. It's just that the way we access, control and define them has rapidly evolved. Despite the weakening sales of consoles and console games, the growth of mobile, social and PC-based games means that total spending on gaming is actually on the rise.

"Inviting more people to the fun and wonderment of games isn't just good for social games, it's good for the entire industry," says Neurath.

It will likely take at least one more console cycle to gauge the long-term sustainability of dedicated gaming devices, experts say. Their ultimate survival all depends on how well console makers adapt to evolving business models and changing consumer tastes.

EE also plans for an additional five cities before the new year. The new phone network, composed of equal parts T-Mobile and Orange, has other plans -- and they start from £21 SIM-only (starting November 9th) while phone packages begin at £36 per month. For that, the new network offers its customers 500MB of data, plus unlimited calls and texts.

The data plans scale up from there, all the way up to 8GB of monthly data, alongside a system of on-off data bundles. So being an earlier adopter comes at a very specific cost -- are the wonders of a next-generation network worth it? We inserted a fresh EE 4G SIM into an iPhone 5 and now have been using it for over a week, get our full verdict after the break.

Coming to Texas ballots: another Bush in 2014?

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? George P. Bush, a rising star among Hispanic conservatives and the grandson of one president and nephew of another, has taken the first step toward seeking elected office in Texas.

But it's unclear what his next step will be.

The 36-year-old attorney from Fort Worth has filed a two-page candidate reporting declaration with the Texas Ethics Commission but didn't list which office he plans to seek. Bush did not return messages at his consulting firm Friday, and his campaign treasurer was traveling in Oklahoma and unavailable for comment.

Still, word of yet another Bush coming to Texas ballots was cheered by Republicans across the state, where party leaders are well aware that they will need Hispanic voters if they want to continue dominating politics here over the next two decades the way did during the last two.

"It's a positive thing to have something besides old white guys like me on the ballot," said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson.

A Democrat has not won statewide office in Texas since 1994, but Hispanics accounted for two-thirds of Texas' population growth over the last decade and now make up 35 percent of its population. Mitt Romney's failure to connect with Latinos is being cited as a reason for his defeat by President Barack Obama, who carried 71 percent of the Hispanic vote nationwide.

"I think George P. Bush is the future of the party," said George Antuna, who co-founded the Hispanic Republicans of Texas with Bush. "Whichever office he decides to seek, we will support him 110 percent."

Bush is the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and his wife, Columba, who was born in Mexico. His uncle is George W. Bush and his grandfather is George H.W. Bush.

George P. Bush speaks Spanish and has been active in politics for years. In August, he was promoted to deputy finance chairman of the Texas Republican Party.

The filing answers at least one question: Texas or Florida?

Bush grew up in the Sunshine State but met his wife Amanda while attending law school at the University of Texas. He later became a partner in a real estate investment company and has since started Fort Worth-based St. Augustine Partners, a business consulting firm.

As recently as September, Bush said he was being recruited to run for statewide office by Texas GOP brass. That same month, however, he launched a four-day bus tour of Florida to drum up support for the Republican Party among college students there.

"I know he has a passion for Texas. Texas is where his granddad lives, where his uncle lives and a lot of other family members," Antuna said. "He's always been a Texan. It just took him a little while to get here."

But Bush's paperwork was filed at a time of great uncertainty among top Texas Republicans.

Gov. Rick Perry, succeeded Bush's uncle as Texas governor in 2000 and has now held the job longer than anyone in history. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has been in his post for a decade. Both are eying re-election runs in 2014.

That's sparked a logjam among Republican statewide officeholders, many of whom are anxious to move up ? and that was before Bush entered the fray.

Attorney General Greg Abbott has raised $14 million, presumably to run for governor. Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples have already said they will challenge Dewhurst, while Comptroller Susan Combs and state Sen. Dan Patrick are also expected to run for lieutenant governor.

As a newcomer, Bush will likely wait to see how the field settles before he announces what office he'll pursue.

If Perry decides not to seek another term as governor in 2014 ? a possibility since he may want to run for president two years later ? then Bush will likely want to run for attorney general. But if Abbott stays put, Bush is expected to run for land commissioner while Patterson campaigns for lieutenant governor.

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Perry and the Bush family don't get along very well. Perry served as George W. Bush's lieutenant governor and once unsuccessfully sought a judicial appointment for his brother-in-law, whom Bush shunned.

Both sides claim the feud has long since cooled, but the Bush family made no secret of its support for Romney, even when Perry briefly challenged him for the Republican presidential nomination. And Jeb Bush has been mentioned as a possible presidential hopeful for 2016, which could pit him against Perry.

Patterson said he believes either attorney general or land commissioner is George P. Bush's likeliest potential destination. The land commissioner administers state-owned lands and mineral resources.

"He comes from pretty decent lineage of folks who've been successful in politics," Patterson said.

Meanwhile, all officeholders will keep an eye on Bush to see if he tries to follow in Ted Cruz's footsteps.
